Our Resistance to Loving Each Other (And What to Do About It.)

I love you. It's plain and simple.

There is nothing you could do to make me love you more, and there is nothing you can do to make me love you less. I see your soul in its complete perfection as a spark of the Divine.

Once, while speaking to a group of spiritual people, I said, “You don’t have to like everyone, but loving everyone is a must.” The thing that I least expected happened after this—I almost incited a riot. Why is this truth such a hard one for us, and why does it elicit such resistance? If those of us who are actively working our spirituality won’t do it, then who will?

This got me thinking. How much hurt we must have endured to come out swinging when a person suggests that it’s our Purpose to Love?

Being a sensitive means that we feel much more deeply than most of the population, which can often leave us feeling lonely. People can’t understand us enough to hold us in the depths of our pain. For this reason, many of us shut down our sensitivity and close our hearts to the degree we perceive necessary for survival. It’s just too painful to face having to go there again, alone.

Society teaches that we like a person first and love grows from there. However, when we look at our natural state, this is backward. You don’t decide if you like your children before loving them, just as they don’t decide if they like you first. Love just takes over.

In the same society, we are taught that we have to love our family members—even when they say and do things that make our skin crawl. We also experience love being used as a weapon, to be withdrawn as punishment and distributed as reward. Is it any wonder that we are confused about our relationship to the natural magic of our hearts?

What if we could see past all of it?

What if we could see each person at the soul level, the way the Creator does—perfectly imperfectly suited to the life they are here to live and the work they are here to do (including push your buttons for your own soul’s growth)?

What if we could see that all of the things that prevent us from being able to see a person’t full Light are simply fears that they piled on top of it?

What if we could see that what upsets us about another might just be one of our own qualities being mirrored back?

Could rest in the truth that Love is our duty and like and trust are the things that are earned?

If so, how would that change your day to day life? Would you feel lighter? More free? More in-control?

Fear is the cause of our inability to love fully and unconditionally. No more and no less. We are not talking about romantic love, but meta-level stuff here— what the Ancient Greeks called agape.

It’s the feeling you experience when you meet an enlightened being—the way the atmosphere changes when you are in their presence. That’s unconditional love, and they are rooted in it, and even though they have never met you before, they are freely bathing you in Love. This is the state of being that will allow you to change the world (for one or for many), just by being present.

In truth, the only way we can’t be hurt is if we are living with a fully open heart. Sounds counterintuitive until you really think about it (or meditate on it.) Love is the way we are connected to Source. When we are in balance, this Love just pours forth through us.

What we need is to grow stronger from the inside, so that we can be steady and remain open-hearted in the midst of the fluctuations that come with living life as a human. When we get rocked off-center, it is often our first response to protect our hearts, yet look at what happens in times of the deepest tragedy. Instinctually, people’s hearts open and we help one another, no matter what the cost. This is the unconquerable power of Love.

Are you ready? Are you ready to heal the parts of you that is in resistance to your purpose of being the Love the world needs? Are you ready to lay down your fears as the feet of the Divine? I think you are, because you are reading this and you have chosen to live in this time of loving action.

What can you do today to take a step toward living a more open and loving life today?
