The 5 Biggest Misconceptions About Energy Work (Including Reiki)

At this time, people are being drawn to many forms of energy work, and for so many different reasons. Our perspective about health and wellness is evolving into a more multi-dimensional approach as we see that we need a much broader scope when investigating and treating ailments.

The increased interest is pointing out some major misunderstandings about these systems that seem to be pretty universal—even amongst people who have been working with them for a long time.

Here are the five most common misconceptions about energy work:

1. It is something “otherworldly,” or in some other way unnatural.

This is exactly 180 degrees opposite of true. Energy work is so much more natural than most of what we currently do to treat ourselves. Life force energy flows through us all day, every day. No matter what your belief system is or how you look at the world, you can wake up in the morning and understand whether you have a surplus of energy or if you're dragging. You’ve even said things like, “I just don't have the energy today.”

Energy flows in through the head and out the feet and back constantly. When we are healthy, the current moves well. When there is a trauma, illness, or blockage, this movement slows down or stops. This can be a physical trauma like a stubbed toe or some stomach pains. It can also be an emotional, mental, or spiritual blockage in the form of pain or suffering. These act like dams that our life force energy has to find a way around.

Remedying this slow-down comes very naturally to us, as is evidenced by our automatic responses. If we hit our elbow a chair, or the first thing we would do is take our other hand and rub it. There is innate understanding that energy has stopped flowing and we need to encourage the flow to start again. Moving the energy physically with the other hand does just that. The same way, if your child has a stomachache, you instinctually rub its belly.

Our intention is to make somebody else feel better through loving them, through giving them attention, which is healing. So you see, life force energy and the need to move it is nothing mysterious.

2. Energy work is another person zapping me with their energy.

No thank you. What happens during an energy session is that the energy comes through the practitioner—just as it comes through you (see #1)—whether you are attuned to any system of healing or not. Those who take a Reiki attunement, for example, have their chakras, including the hand chakras, cleared and opened further.

When you go for an energy session, the practitioner holds the space for you to relax and release. Through training, this person has learned techniques to locate where energy is blocked, and brings attention there. They will then assist your body in the release and integration of the increased energy flow. Your body is actually doing the healing. The person has learned the technique but the energy is not theirs. They are just allowing this life force energy to pour through them to you.

Now, if you're a practitioner and you find yourself being really tired after a session, you can be sure that you are using your own energy instead of allowing the energy to flow through you. Feeling relaxed after a session is common, but feeling tired is not.

3. I’m not worthy.

The idea that you have to be in some way worthy to receive the benefits of energy work is something that I’ve heard a lot lately, even from people who’ve been working with energy for a while. I cannot stress this enough—just by being, you are intrinsically worthy. Worthy of all that the Divine has in store for you and wants to shower you with. You are worthy just as you are now.

Universal Law states that one cannot be worked on without giving permission. All you need to do to give permission is to say yes physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Then just let it happen. Receive. That's it. You don't have to sit for two days in meditation or say any special prayer—but you can, if that is your preference.

***This is just a reminder to practitioners that we do need that buy-in, either a physical and verbal yes from somebody or a spiritual yes.****

4. Energy work should be free.

I wish we would just be done with this already. This is that lack and limitation consciousness and those vows of poverty that continuously plague us from lifetimes past.

It is very clearly stated within the protocols of every energy system that there needs to be an exchange of energy in order for this to work. We need to stand in the value of what we're bringing to the table (quite literally), so that others value what they are receiving. It’s that simple.. We've taken training. We’ve practiced a lot. We’ve done a lot of good with what we bring to the table. It is time for us to stand in that value.

In the past we may have exchanged goods or services for energy work, and a lot of us are still tempted to do this. It doesn’t take long for us to see that it very rarely works out. At this time, the way that we exchange is with money. It is the easiest, most direct way, and then we can then buy our own goods and services.

People have no problem paying a doctor, a lawyer, or someone to come and fix their washing machine, so why should anyone have a problem paying for this? Especially if you're standing in the value of what you offer and they value it enough to ask for your assistance.

5. You Can Be Trained Online. You ABSOLUTELY Can’t.

I’ve seen people say that there is some debate about this. There isn’t. You either know the systems or not. If you do, you know that there needs to be physical touch from master to student in order for the system to be passed on. The energy needs to flow physically from the teacher to the student and open up and clear the system so that you can then hold the frequency and allow the increased energy to flow through you.

There are a lot of people who are offering trainings virtually. Don’t waste your time and/or money. They have not learned the systems properly if they are offering this as an option.

To be clear, you can study the theory of these energy systems virtually. However, you cannot get the hands-on practice or the attunements this way. And in order to take an attunement, you need to have hands-on practice with other people and with yourself. You cannot learn this virtually—especially in the introductory levels. So, when looking for a practitioner or trainer, please ask them if they took ALL of their attunements in-person. Their answer will help you to weed out those who are not qualified.

I've heard people say that their frequency is such that they are able to do this now, or that they are in the 5D or have otherwise gotten special permission. Know that they are in their egos, and reiki and other forms of energy work do not work when there is ego present.

If you have been told that you received a virtual attunement and you're wondering what to do, just find a teacher who teaches in-person and tell them what you experienced. They might ask to see the materials you learned from. Then work with them to figure out if you need to take the whole training again or if you can just come for the attunement. Then you will have the whole package.

Whether wanting to receive energy work or learn it, trust that you'll be led to the exact right place to get exactly what you need.

TLDR:

Energy work is awesome.

Humans assign much more mystery to energy work than there is.

You are worthy.

There needs to be a monetary exchange for a session.

You can’t be trained virtually or online, so don’t bother.
