Start Improving Your Breast Health Today

There are so many things that we can be doing in the 364 days between annual mammographies or thermographic scans that can increase the health and the wellness of our breast tissue.

We can use our sensitivities to make a huge impact in our health and in our wellness. It’s one of the blessings of being sensitive—small changes can have a really big impact.

Understand the lymphatic system.

In Eastern medicine like Ayurveda, the lymphatic system is the first place that we look for stagnation when ill health strikes. Keeping this system healthy has a huge impact in all areas of health.

The lymph acts as the garbage barge of your body, collecting and carrying toxins of all kinds. The goal is to keep these toxins moving, eventually bringing them to leave the body. But the lymph doesn't have a pump. So, on its own, it stays put.

In order to move the lymph, we need to move our bodies and get our hearts pumping. The heart acts as the adopted pump, and as it pumps the blood, it pumps the lymph.

There are a huge number of lymph nodes in the armpit and breast area, so keeping this system moving is integral to keeping breast tissue healthy. If you are someone who has experienced breast swelling during PMS or during your menstrual cycle, you know what stuck lymph can feel like. It’s uncomfortable, to say the least.

Interactive Blog Moment: How well is the lymph in your breast tissue moving?

  1. Take a deep breath and raise your arms up overhead. Roll the shoulders back and down so they are not hugging your ears.
  2. Now hold this for one full minute while breathing deeply in and out through the nose.
  3. When the minute is up, release the arms and shake them out if you need to.
  4. Feel what’s happening in your body. Do you feel tingling? Is your skin red? Do you feel heat? Movement?
  5. Celebrate! You made it through perhaps the longest minute of your life and your lymph is now moving!

This is a great exercise to do daily to keep your breast tissue healthy.

Check Yourself.

You've been told how important self-exams are. And at the same time, you can massage your breast tissue daily. This simple act can move the lymph, bring some love and some energy to the tissue, and allow the benefits of the oil to work for you.

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and every single thing that you put on it gets absorbed into the bloodstream. This is why topical medications and oils work so well. And perhaps the most powerful oil for breast tissue health is flax. In Ayurveda, we say that it has a lekhana effect. This means that it has the properties of scraping and cleansing, breaking up anything that has gathered.

Now, if you tend to run hot, be fiery, or know that your predominant dosha is pitta, you might find that flax oil is too heating or develop a reaction to it. If that happens, you can mix the flax oil with sunflower (or coconut) oil.

First, make sure that your oil is brought to room temperature or heated very gently so it's just a little bit warm, you don't want to burn yourself. Then, 15 to 20 minutes before showering, apply it to the breast tissue, rubbing in a circular motion around the breast, always ending at the sternum. Why? Because the heart is going to pump the lymph, so you are bringing it right to the heart!

Let the oil sit on your skin for about 15 minutes, then take your shower. The heat of the shower will allow your pores to open so that your body absorbs more of the oil. You don’t have to wash it with soap, since the oil is cleansing. You can do this as often as you want, or once weekly. It’s up to you!

Don’t be afraid to stink!

Antiperspirant was perhaps the worst thing ever invented with regard to breast health, and deodorant is far behind. Sweat is one of the ways the body moves the toxins that have been traveling around out. When we block our sweat glands from doing their job, these toxins get reabsorbed into the body.

I heard a surgeon say that she’s always amazed at how much deodorant she smells when she makes an incision for breast surgery.

The least amount of time you can spend wearing antiperspirant or deodorant is the best amount of time. If you want to stop completely, know that will probably take a couple of weeks for your body to regulate. You will most likely smell pretty interesting for that time, then you will balance out. (If balance doesn’t happen, that will give you a clue to other potential imbalances in your system!) You can carry soap and a washcloth in your bag, if it makes you feel better.

I have a lot of eyeroll moments when I talk about this with people, but then they move through the process and are surprised at how well it works and how different they feel!

Set the girls free.

Another big problem for breast health is the underwire bra. The underwire blocks creates stagnation in the lymphatic system and the blood, preventing the breast tissue from being properly nourished.

There are now several companies making supportive bras without underwires. However, if you like your underwire bras, enjoy them guilt free! Now you are aware of what’s happening so that you can take steps to counter their effect on your breast tissue, like self-massaging when you remove your bra.

If you can ditch your bras completely, even better!

Prana power!

The last tool is very powerful and is the one that's with you from the moment you’re born. It’s the breath. When there is congestion, pain, or stagnation of any kind in the body, you can use the breath to start breaking it up or to bring attention and flow back to the area.

Interactive Blog Moment:
Bring your breath to your breast tissue, let it circulate there, gathering anything that needs to be released, and exhale it out. The breath is a fantastic way to move toxins and can bring energetic movement and blood flow to an area. Just spending even 1-5 minutes a day breathing this way can change the health of your breast tissue for the better.

You get to choose which of these tools feel resonant and attainable to you, based on where you are in your life at this time. Play with these, and see what works for you. Know that as you do, you are clearing energy that might be stagnant due to wounding, difficulty accepting love and nurturing, and problems around mothering or being mothered—in your own system and in the collective.

You’re helping the world to clear its wounds around these things in a healthy, nourishing and supportive way as you increase your wellness, as well!

How powerful is this?

There are things on this list that require minimal investment and there are things that require no investment at all, other than maybe 3 minutes of your time.

You deserve to be loved and nurtured in this way and to be as healthy and vibrant as possible.

If you are one of our friends who is currently moving through an issue with breast health, you can begin to use these tools once you are done with your chosen course of treatment and are healed up. These things will then help you to continue to be as healthy as possible moving forward.

As you increase the health of your breasts, your overall wellness, and your ability to nourish yourself and be nourished by the world you’re going to stand stronger and more power-fully in the Work you are here to do and the vibration you are here to be.
