When it comes to spiritual communication, there are three questions I get asked all the time:
- How can I receive these communications or clarify what I think I am receiving?
- Can I be sure my messages are coming from a good place or benevolent being?
- How do I know these are actual messages and not just my thoughts, feelings, and desires?
Before we go any further, it’s important to know that you are the one who has the power to qualify all of your communications. Stating that you are only willing to connect with beings of the highest Light and the highest intention for good (or whichever words draw your particular boundaries) lays some ground rules, and Universe has no choice to bend to your will.
In addition, ask that Archangel Michael to be ever-present and overlight any messages that come through. He is the protector Angel, and you can speak with him directly to request his presence, or ask the Divine to send him.

That being said, here are some ways to recognize communications coming from your Angels, guides, and loved ones who have crossed over:
• They can happen through any of your spiritual senses—seeing, hearing, feeling, or knowing.
• It may feel as if feathers have touched your skin—particularly arms, shoulders, upper back, and sometimes even the head or face.
• You may feel a presence that seems familiar, even if you haven’t met or worked with this being before. (This is also how we often perceive our deceased loved ones if they're coming to visit.)
• You may smell something pleasant, or, in the case of loved ones who have crossed, something related to them—cologne, smoke, or anything reminiscent of their earthly expression.
• You don’t have to try so hard. They are always there and are always communicating with you, so it's simply a matter of taking your thoughts to a still point, as much as possible. Quieting your energy allows you to be more receptive, even if your body is moving—like when running or showering.
• These communications may come out of the blue, be in response to a question that you've been pondering, or guidance you’ve been seeking—but they always seek to help in some way.
• There's a feeling/knowing that this is real and true. (Note: That knowing can fade if your head gets involved.)
• Even when direct and firm, these messages are unconditionally loving.
• Your Angels will speak using different language (or visuals) than you would use. This is so that you know it’s coming from somewhere else.
• They use the terms “you” or “we” and not “I”—unless you’ve asked them to identify themselves.
• Your messages always come back. You will never ever miss an opportunity, because the Angels will keep giving you the same message (or something similar).
• You may hear a high-pitched frequency in one or the other of your ears. This is information that is being “downloaded” to you and will open naturally within you. (Pay attention to which ear it is. That’s your dominant ear for receiving clairaudient communication!)
• The messages are clear and to the point.
• These messages are always focused on helping you or others. • You will often be given an action step. Once you are ready to take this action and do so, more guidance will follow. One step at a time. No overwhelm.
• You may find the same types of objects over and over—feathers, coins, etc.
• You may see the same numbers or number patterns repeating in your life.
In addition, these feelings may be present when receiving messages from your Angels, guides, and loved ones:
• Safety.
• Warmth. Like a hug.
• Peace-full-ness (even if there is a warning or you are being coaxed out of your comfort zone.)
• Love/Loved
• Joy
• Happiness
• Curiosity
• Being understood
• Chills of knowing and Truth
• Inviting
• Familiar
• Strong gut feeling
• Empowerment
• Guided/Led
• Filled up/full heart
• Like you are in conversation with someone else (outside of yourself)
You will never feel threatened, sick, nauseous, cold, or discomfort. There will be no cruelty, loudness, harm, or fear. If this happens, call on Archangel Michael to help you clear the energy and command that only beings of the highest Light and intention for good may enter your space.
If you're receiving communication and can’t quite understand it, ask your Angels to communicate in a clearer way and/or invite them to come closer. Do this with regard to your predominant spiritual sense. Would you like them to them take form or show up as pops of color? Would you like to hear a voice in the room or from within? What are your boundaries around feeling too much or not enough? Would you like validation for your knowing?
They are always looking to refine and expand communication in ways that are comfortable to you, so that you can feel safe and be as open as possible.
Remember, Angels cannot interfere with your free will, so you need to take the actions you are guided to if and when they feel right to you (and you are ready to do so). The only exception is if someone is about to die and it is not their time. (You’ve heard those stories about people and animals swooping in to save others and then disappearing.)
I hope this information helps you to open up to the possibility of and deepen your connection and communication with the Angels, as well as your guides and loved ones who want to say hi and support you in the best way they can now.
