People are fascinated by crystals. For some, they are a natural extension of their spiritual journey, others simply like them to beautify a space. No matter why you’re choosing to make crystals a part of your experience, there are some things that it’s important to know.
Here are 5 things everyone needs to know about crystals:
1. Choosing your crustal. Though well-intentioned friends and family might try to choose a crystal for you, ultimately you are the only one who can pick the “right” one. You need to feel the resonance, which can be as simple as a deep desire to bring it home with you.
More often than not, the crystal chooses you. You’ll be stopped in your tracks by something that fascinates you and you’ll want to pick it up and examine it.
You might come across a crystal that you feel like you’ve known before. Many believe they’ve programmed wisdom into crystals in lifetimes past, so that they could meet up again to remember and integrate it when the timing is right. This would explain why there is such a strong resonance when the “right” crystal crosses your path.
Let yourself spend some time with a crystal make sure that the resonance is correct. Trust that you’ll just know.
2. Crystals need cleansing. We are talking about living, breathing agents of healing, that, just like people, need to be bathed and cleaned. Crystals can act as sponges for energy, absorbing whatever is not beneficial for a space. They are also amplifiers, so having them be as clean as possible ensures that you are amplifying the right things.
Fortunately, you probably already have everything you need to keep your crystals clean.
When you bring your new crystal home, cleaning it in Castile soap and water will get rid of old debris. This is a good technique as long as the crystal will not dissolve, like selenite. (I learned this the hard way! ????) This technique can be used again at any time throughout life of your crystal.
For general maintenance, leaving crystals in the moonlight—particularly the full moon light, is a great way to cleanse them. It allows them to release and get charged up with soft, yet powerful energy.
Bathing them in sunlight is a great way to amplify and charge them. This is also cleansing, but is more about energizing. Be aware that sunlight will cause the color of some crystals to fade some crystals, like amethyst. You’ll want to avoid using this technique with them.
Play with your crystals and see which technique works best for them, as individuals!

3. Size Matters. The larger the crystal, the more energy it packs, but bigger is not always better. Larger crystals can sometimes be overwhelming. Having the wisdom to choose the right-sized crystal for the job at hand is important.
This is where it’s really important to live in your intuition and not your ego. People shop for the largest crystals under the false belief that “I am such a high vibration that I need the biggest possible crystal to reflect that,” which doesn't every lead to the best outcome.
The size of your chosen crystal doesn't mean anything in terms of your energy. It means you had the wisdom to check in and listen, selecting the one with the right vibration for you, for whatever reason.
Chances are that it’s because of the wisdom it contains, rather than the amount of energy it’s putting out.
4. Crystals change the energy of any space. They work as conductors and amplifiers, so you really want to choose the right ones for the space. Too much crystal energy in an area can start creating a cathedral-like effect, which isn't necessarily the right energy for a family, but might be right for a healing space. For a home, maybe use smaller crystals spaced throughout, possibly even crystals that resonate with different members of the family and what they're going through or experiencing.
Paying attention to what the space is being used for is key.
It’s also important to note what each type of crystal supports, and what challenges they may bring to the situation. Bring in crystals that would support the function of the space and the people who utilize it. After all, you wouldn't call a lawyer to fix a clogged toilet or a landscaper to examine your doggo.
When you bring crystals to a space, people will ask if you’ve changed something and try to figure out what’s different. You'll be surprised how many people notice—even if they aren’t “crystal people.”
Play with this, and see!
5. Crystals are not yours forever. Sometimes, your journey with a particular crystal will be very short-lived, and at other times might go on for an entire lifetime.
Often, when a journey ends, the crystal will spontaneously break or get fractured somehow. Crystals are of the earth, so once this happens, it is time to return it there. Ask the crystal where it wants to go. It might show you a location, or you might just know where to bury it.
Keeping broken or repaired crystals creates distorted energy fields. Yet we can be reluctant to let go, especially if we’ve invested resources like time and money into them.
At other times, you’ll feel that a crystal is not yours anymore or that your time together is done. This means it’s time to release it to another. You might have some idea of tho that person is, but for the same reasons we discussed in #1, always ask if it feels resonant. Don’t just thrust your crystal upon them. Remember, the relationship needs to be right, and both parties need to feel the resonance.
So, whether you're using crystals for personal growth and healing work, or you’re just bringing them in to beautify your space, these things are game-changers, and a great place to start or enhance your crystal magic!
